Itinerary

🗺️ Detailed Itinerary

Uyuni Salt Flats Day Trip – From Uyuni

The experience begins with pickup from your hotel in Uyuni, or from the bus terminal or airport if arriving on the same day of the tour.

Our first stop will be the Train Cemetery, a historic site where old rusty locomotives tell the story of Bolivia’s mining boom. It’s an ideal spot for artistic photography among rails and abandoned structures.

We will then continue to the village of Colchani, the gateway to the salt flats, where we will observe the artisanal process of salt extraction, traditional handicrafts, and alpaca textiles. Here, you will have the opportunity to purchase authentic souvenirs directly from local artisans.

Afterward, we will delve into the majestic Uyuni Salt Flats, an endless expanse of white salt that stretches to the horizon. We will visit the salt mounds, the famous Ojos del Salar (underground water springs), the Dakar Monument, and the Stairway to Heaven, an artistic structure perfect for creative photography. We’ll also visit the famous Salt Hotel (now a museum) and the Forest of Flags, a colorful place where emblems from around the world fly.

Here, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch with a panoramic view of the salt flat, surrounded by a surreal landscape. In the afternoon, we’ll head to Incahuasi Island, an oasis in the middle of the salt flat, filled with giant cacti, some over a thousand years old. From the top, you’ll have a stunning 360° view of the salt flat. This island is also an excellent place to take photos with unique perspectives.

Finally, we’ll head to a viewpoint to contemplate the magical sunset over the Salar de Uyuni, where the sky is tinged with intense colors reflected on the white background. We’ll then return to the town of Uyuni, culminating in an unforgettable experience.

Recommendations

Recommendations

Wear warm clothing: Although the day may start sunny, temperatures in the mountains change rapidly and can drop considerably by evening. It is recommended to wear several layers of clothing (fleece, windbreaker, or thermal jacket) to adapt to the changing weather.

Protect your skin and eyes: The sun’s reflection on the white surface of the salt flat is very intense. Wear sunscreen, UV-filtering sunglasses, and a hat or cap to avoid sunburn and glare.

Bring extra water and snacks: Although lunch is included, the hike is long and the dry weather can cause dehydration. Bring your own water bottle and some light snacks such as energy bars, fruit, or nuts.

Wear comfortable, waterproof shoes: During the rainy season (December through March), the salt flat is partially covered with water, creating the famous “mirror effect.” Waterproof sneakers or boots are recommended, as the terrain can be wet or slippery.

Camera or cell phone with a good camera: The Salar de Uyuni is a paradise for photography lovers. Be sure to bring charged batteries or an external battery, as the opportunities to capture creative images and unique perspectives are endless.

Cash (Bolivian bolivianos): Not all stops accept cards, so it’s necessary to carry cash to pay for entrance fees, use public restrooms, or buy local souvenirs.

During the rainy season (December to March): Bring waterproof clothing and a change of clothes, as it’s possible to get wet during stops or when walking on the flooded surface of the salt flat.

Care for the environment: Don’t leave trash and avoid extracting salt or damaging natural formations. The Salar de Uyuni is a fragile ecosystem and a natural heritage site that deserves respect and conservation.
