RECOMMENDATIONS
🌟 Recommendations
Although it’s a short tour, the Short Inca Trail requires preparation and attention to detail. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of this experience:
- Arrive in Cusco early. We recommend arriving at least one day before the tour to acclimatize to the altitude and rest well before the start of the hike.
- Pack a light backpack. Carry only the essentials for the hike: water, a poncho, a camera, snacks, sunscreen, and a light layer. Weight will be your best ally.
- Dress in layers. The weather varies greatly throughout the day: cool mornings, hot afternoons, and mild nights in Aguas Calientes. Ideally, wear light clothing, but also a windproof or waterproof jacket.
- Protect your skin and eyes. Don’t forget to use sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun’s rays at altitude.
- Wear appropriate footwear. Wear hiking boots or shoes with good soles that you’ve worn before. Avoid wearing new footwear on this hike.
- Stay hydrated. Bring a reusable water bottle with at least one liter of water and take frequent sips to avoid fatigue.
- Don’t forget your passport. It’s mandatory to show it at the Inca Trail checkpoint and at Machu Picchu. It must match your entry information.
- Bring insect repellent. Although insects aren’t common, mosquitoes are common in humid areas, especially in the afternoon.
- Have cash in soles. Not all businesses in Aguas Calientes accept cards. We recommend carrying some cash for personal expenses or tips.
- Respect the trail and archaeological sites. Don’t leave trash, don’t touch Inca structures, and always follow the guide’s instructions.
