RECOMMENDATIONS
🌟 Recommendations
- Appropriate Clothing and Footwear
Trekking shoes: Trekking boots with good grip are recommended to avoid slipping, especially on steep or wet sections.
Light and breathable clothing: The weather can change throughout the day, so it’s important to dress in layers. Bring light clothing for the hike, but be sure to include a waterproof or windproof jacket, as the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable.
- Sun Protection
Sunscreen: Although the weather may be cool in the morning, the sun’s rays in the highlands are intense. Apply high-factor sunscreen to all exposed areas (face, neck, arms) and reapply every few hours, especially after sweating or if you get wet.
Hydration:
Bring enough water: Although drinking water is provided during the trek, we recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the tour. It is recommended to drink water regularly, as the hike, the altitude, and the sun can quickly dehydrate you.
Energy snacks: Bring light snacks such as energy bars, nuts, or chocolate to maintain your energy throughout the hike. These will help you replenish your energy between stops.
- Altitude Acclimatization:
Arrive early: If you are not used to the altitude, we recommend arriving in Cusco at least one day before the tour to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness. Rest the day before and drink coca water, which is traditionally used to prevent the effects of altitude sickness.
- Identification:
Passport or ID: Make sure you bring your original passport or ID. It is required to enter Machu Picchu and the trek, and is also required at the Inca Trail checkpoints.
Entrance Tickets: Keep your entrance tickets to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail. You will carry them with you during the hike and upon entering the archaeological site.
- Personal Safety
Trekking Poles: If you have knee problems or prefer greater stability, it is recommended to bring trekking poles. They are especially useful for the steeper sections of the trail.
Basic First Aid Kit: Although the guide will carry a first aid kit, it is helpful to carry a small personal first aid kit, including bandages, disinfectant, pain relievers, and personal medications.
Insect Protection: Bring insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites, especially in high jungle areas.
Respect the Environment
Leave No Trash: Make sure to bring your own trash bags and do not leave any waste on the Inca Trail or Machu Picchu. Responsible tourism is key to environmental conservation.
Do Not Touch the Ruins: To preserve the archaeological structures, touching or climbing the Inca ruins is not permitted. Always follow the guide’s instructions and respect conservation regulations.
- Physical Condition
Physical Preparation: Although the 1-Day Inca Trail is not as long as the 4-day trek, it is recommended to be in good physical shape to enjoy the hike. Take some hikes a few days before the tour to prepare your body, especially on uneven terrain.
- Money and Payments
Cash: Bring some cash (in soles or dollars) for personal purchases or emergencies. Many places in Aguas Calientes do not accept credit cards, so it is advisable to have cash available.
Tipping: Although tipping is optional, if the service has been excellent, you may tip the guide and support staff (guides, cooks, porters).

1. Is the 1-Day Inca Trail Tour suitable for everyone?
The 1-Day Inca Trail Tour is suitable for people in good physical condition. The trek lasts approximately 6 hours, and although it is not as demanding as the full 4-day Inca Trail, it has a moderate level of difficulty due to the steep ascents and descents. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions (such as knee, heart, or respiratory problems), it is advisable to consult your doctor before starting the tour. This tour is ideal for those who enjoy walking long distances and being outdoors.
2. Can I go on the trek if I have no experience with long hikes?
Yes, you can. However, we recommend being in good physical shape and doing some prior hikes, even on uneven terrain, to acclimatize to the altitude and physical exertion. Despite being a one-day trek, the hike is quite challenging in some sections. The key is to take your time, walk at a comfortable pace, and not rush.
3. How do I acclimatize to the altitude before trekking?
Acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness. To ensure your body adapts properly, we recommend arriving in Cusco at least a day before the trek to allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude. During this time, avoid alcohol and heavy meals. You can consume coca water to help your body adapt. Staying well hydrated is also key.

It is advisable to wear layered clothing to adapt to temperature changes and always be prepared for possible rain, especially if you travel during the rainy season (November to March).
6. Can I take the tour if I am afraid of heights?
The Inca Trail includes some sections of the trail at considerable altitude and with panoramic views, which can be challenging for those with a fear of heights. If you feel this could be a problem, it’s important to consider other, gentler tours or ask your guide if there are alternatives to enjoy the experience without having to face highly exposed areas.
7. How long is the trek?
The trek lasts approximately 6 hours (from Km 104 to Machu Picchu). The hike is of moderate difficulty, with ups and downs, and is done at a comfortable pace, with breaks to rest and enjoy the scenery. Most visitors complete it without problems, as long as they are properly acclimatized and prepared.
8. Can I take the train earlier if I can’t complete the trek?
If you are unable to complete the trek, it is possible to take the return train from Aguas Calientes. The team of guides and staff can arrange this alternative transfer in case of emergency or for health reasons.
