ITINERARY
📍 Detailed Tour Itinerary
Departure from Puno and border crossing into Bolivia
The tour begins with a transfer from your accommodation in Puno to the bus terminal. From there, you’ll board a tourist bus bound for the Bolivian border. Upon arrival in Kasani, you’ll complete the necessary immigration procedures with the assistance of a guide, who will guide you through the process to ensure a smooth crossing.
Arrival in Copacabana, Bolivia
Once you enter Bolivian territory, the route continues along the majestic Lake Titicaca until you reach the traditional town of Copacabana. This highland town is an important religious and cultural center, famous for housing the venerated Virgin of Copacabana. Here, you’ll enjoy a break to enjoy a typical lunch with Andean ingredients.
Visit to the Basilica of Copacabana
In the city center is Bolivia’s main Catholic church: the Basilica of the Virgin of Copacabana. This imposing building of mestizo baroque architecture houses the patron saint of Bolivia, venerated by thousands of faithful each year. Your guide will tell you the story behind this miraculous figure and its syncretism with ancestral beliefs.
Sailing on Lake Titicaca to the Island of the Sun
From the port of Copacabana, you will board a boat that will sail south across the deep waters of Lake Titicaca. During the journey, you will admire the reflection of the Andes on the sacred lake, considered by the Incas to be the place where Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, the founders of the Inca Empire, emerged.
Exploring Isla del Sol
Once on the island, you’ll begin a hike to the archaeological site of Pilkokaina, also known as the Temple of the Sun. This site was a ceremonial center dedicated to Inti, the sun god, and still preserves perfectly assembled Inca-style walls.
You’ll then ascend the legendary Yumani Steps, a set of stone steps leading to the Fountain of Youth, whose waters flow from three pipes symbolizing the principles of Andean wisdom: ama sua, ama llulla, ama quella (do not be a thief, do not be a liar, do not be lazy).
Return to Copacabana and return to Puno
After this spiritual and scenic experience, you’ll return by boat to Copacabana, where you’ll have some free time to stroll through the town or shop for handicrafts. Finally, you’ll board the tourist transport that will take you back to Puno, thus concluding a day full of history, culture, nature, and mysticism.
