🌅Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata National Reserve – Sandoval Lake
- Welcome and transfer to the pier
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our team will greet you at the airport or bus terminal. We will provide a brief orientation about the route, safety recommendations, and an introduction to the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse protected areas on the planet.
- Navigation on the Madre de Dios River
We will board a motorized boat for a 30-minute cruise along the majestic Madre de Dios River. During the trip, you will be able to see tropical birds such as kingfishers, herons, and toucans, as well as capybaras resting on the banks.
- Entrance to the Tambopata National Reserve
We will make a brief stop at the official checkpoint for entry registration. Here, your guide will explain the ecological importance of the site, home to emblematic species such as the giant otter, the black caiman, and the hoatzin (a prehistoric bird).
- Interpretive Walk through the Amazon Rainforest
We will begin a 3-kilometer hike (approximately 1 hour) along nature trails surrounded by ancient trees such as the shihuahuaco, the Amazon Brazil nut, and the aguajale palms. The guide will show you medicinal plants and interesting facts about Amazonian wildlife.
-
Canoe Trip on Lake Sandoval
We will arrive at Lake Sandoval, a natural gem surrounded by palm trees and home to countless species. Aboard a traditional paddle canoe, you will silently navigate its calm waters to observe giant otters, taricaya turtles, tiger herons, and howler monkeys that come to drink.
- Amazonian Lunch and Rest
We will enjoy a typical jungle lunch, with dishes such as fish wrapped in bijao leaves, Amazonian chaufa rice, tropical salads, and exotic fruit juices such as aguaje, cocona, or camu camu. You will then have time to relax in hammocks and connect with nature.
- Wildlife Watching and Amazonian Sunset
In the afternoon, we will take a second canoe trip to look for birds and animals that are more active at the end of the day: scarlet macaws, toucans, capuchin monkeys, and, if we’re lucky, anacondas resting among the mangroves.
We will culminate with a golden sunset over the lake, reflected in its crystal-clear waters, ideal for panoramic photographs.
- Dinner and Night Walk in the Jungle
Back at the lodge, you will enjoy dinner with typical Amazonian flavors. We’ll then embark on a night hike through the surrounding area to discover the hidden life of the forest: tree frogs, bioluminescent insects, hunting spiders, and the mysterious night sounds that make this Amazonian experience unique.
🌄Day 2: Sandoval Lake – Birdwatching – Return to Puerto Maldonado
Sunrise and Birdwatching
Very early, before dawn, we will set out by canoe to enjoy the awakening of the jungle. This is the best time to observe birds at their most magnificent: macaws, toucans, grey herons, and cormorants adorn the sky above Sandoval Lake.
- Amazonian Breakfast at the Lodge
We will return to the lodge to enjoy a natural breakfast with fresh fruit, tropical juices, local coffee, and artisanal breads prepared in the Amazonian style.
- Last Canoe Trip on Sandoval Lake
Before bidding farewell to this magical place, we will take one last trip through less-traveled areas of the lake, ideal for observing discreet wildlife such as kingfishers, squirrel monkeys, and vibrantly colored butterflies.
- Return hike through the jungle and final boat ride
We’ll begin the return hike (approximately 3 km) to the checkpoint, where you can continue enjoying the birdsong and sounds of the forest. From there, we’ll sail back down the Madre de Dios River toward Puerto Maldonado.

RECOMMENDATIONS
🌟 Recommendations for the Sandoval Lake 2D/1N Tour
🎒 Pack light, but functional: Bring a carry-on backpack with the essentials: comfortable, lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect you from the sun and insects, plus an extra change of clothes in case of rain. Quick-drying clothing is ideal for the humidity of the jungle.
🥾 Appropriate footwear: Although some lodges provide rubber boots, we recommend non-slip sneakers or waterproof sandals for use in the lodge and for day hikes.
🌧️ Prepare for rain: The Amazonian weather is unpredictable. Don’t forget to pack a waterproof poncho, a backpack or camera cover, and plastic bags to protect your belongings from moisture.
🌞 Sun and insect protection: Bring biodegradable sunscreen, a hat or cap with a wide brim, sunglasses, and eco-friendly insect repellent with DEET. These items are essential to avoid burns and stings.
🔦 Bring a flashlight or personal headlamp: Although the night walk includes lighting, it’s important to have your own light source, especially inside the lodge at night.
📷 Binoculars and camera recommended: If you’re a birdwatching and wildlife enthusiast, don’t forget your camera with extra battery, binoculars, and an empty memory card. You won’t want to miss those unique moments!
💧 Stay hydrated: Bring your reusable water bottle. The lodge usually has purified water to refill. The humidity and heat make staying hydrated crucial.
🧼 Bring your personal toiletries: Shampoo, biodegradable soap, toothbrush, small towel, toilet paper, etc. Many lodges don’t provide these or only provide them in limited quantities.
🧘♂️ Disconnect to reconnect: There’s no cell phone service or internet at Lake Sandoval. Let your contacts know you’ll be offline so they can fully enjoy the experience.
🤝 Respect the environment and wildlife: Do not feed animals, do not pick plants, stay on the trails, and follow the guide’s instructions. Conservation begins with each visitor.
