Uros and Taquile by Speedboat

DESCRIPTION

Tour Description

This full-day tour will take you to two of Lake Titicaca’s most iconic destinations: the Uros Floating Islands and Taquile Island. Aboard a speedboat, you’ll save time navigating, allowing you to enjoy the sights and activities more comfortably.

On the Uros floating islands, you’ll learn about their history, traditions, and way of life, and you’ll also have the option of taking a ride on their typical totora reed rafts. Then, on Taquile Island—a UNESCO Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity thanks to its textile art—you’ll walk trails surrounded by unique Andean landscapes, learn about their customs, and enjoy a local lunch in a family restaurant before returning to Puno.

ITINERARY

Detailed Itinerary of the Uros – Taquile Full-Day Tour by Speedboat

7:00 a.m. – Pickup from your hotel and transfer to the port
The day begins very early with a transfer from your hotel in Puno to the main port of Lake Titicaca. During the journey, your guide will provide an introduction to the importance of the lake, considered the highest navigable lake in the world (3,812 m above sea level), and the cultures that inhabit its islands.

7:30 a.m. – Boarding and sailing to the Uros Floating Islands
We will board a speedboat equipped with comfortable seats and panoramic windows. After approximately 25 minutes of sailing, we will arrive at the famous Uros floating islands, a group of more than 80 artificial islands built entirely of totora reeds, an aquatic plant that grows in the lake.
Here, the local guide will explain how the inhabitants build the islands, their houses, and totora rafts, as well as share details about their community organization, customs, fishing traditions, and crafts.
Activities:
Guided tour of the island.
Free time to take photographs of the surroundings and the inhabitants dressed in colorful traditional clothing.
Option to take a totora raft ride, a traditional means of transportation (additional cost).

9:00 a.m. – Departure to Taquile Island
Back aboard the speedboat, we continue the journey across Lake Titicaca to Taquile Island, located 35 km from the port of Puno. The trip lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, during which you can admire the Andean landscape, the deep blue waters of the lake, and, on clear days, even see the Bolivian Royal Mountain Range in the background.
During the journey, the guide will share information about the island’s history and its declaration as a UNESCO Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity due to its rich textile art, considered one of the finest in the Andes.

10:15 a.m. – Arrival in Taquile and cultural walk
We disembark at the southern pier of Taquile and begin a walk along a gently ascending cobblestone path. The island is characterized by its pre-Incan agricultural terraces, where potatoes, quinoa, and beans are still grown.
Stops along the way:
Explanation on the use of Andean medicinal plants such as muña, used to relieve digestive problems.
Observation of the daily life of the locals: sheep herding, women spinning wool or weaving, and children playing on the trails.
Natural viewpoints from which you can appreciate spectacular views of Lake Titicaca.
The hike, approximately 45 minutes to an hour, is moderate, but breaks are provided so that all visitors can enjoy the journey without difficulty.

12:30 p.m. – Typical lunch at a local restaurant
We will arrive at a family restaurant where you will be hospitably welcomed by the Taquile residents. The menu includes dishes made with fresh island produce, such as:
Starter: Andean quinoa or vegetable soup.
Main course: Fresh grilled trout accompanied by rice, native potatoes, and salad.
Infusion: Coca or muña tea to aid digestion and aid altitude sickness.
During the meal, there will be a demonstration of Taquile textile art, where the symbolism of the weaving, its importance in cultural identity, and the role it plays within society will be explained.

1:30 p.m. – Free time on the island
After lunch, you will have free time to walk through the main square, visit small community shops selling authentic textiles (sashes, chullos, ponchos), and chat with the locals.

2:00 p.m. – Return to the north pier and boarding
We will disembark at another pier on the island, enjoying the last panoramic views. There, our speedboat will be waiting for us to begin the return to Puno.

4:00 p.m. – Arrival at the port of Puno
The tour ends with disembarkation at the port and transfer to your hotel in Puno.

RECOMENDATIONS

Tour Recommendations

  • Previous Acclimatization:
Lake Titicaca is located at over 3,800 meters above sea level, so it is recommended to spend at least 1 or 2 days in Puno before the tour.
This helps reduce altitude sickness (soroche). You can consume coca or muña infusions to relieve mild symptoms.
  • Appropriate Clothing:
Bring light clothing for sunny mornings and a coat for the afternoon, as the weather changes rapidly.
A windbreaker or waterproof jacket may be useful in case of sudden rain.
A hat, cap, or visor for sun protection.
  • Sun Protection:
UV radiation in the highlands is very intense, even on cloudy days.
Use high-protection sunscreen, sunglasses with UV filter, and lip balm.
  • Comfortable footwear:
Lightweight hiking or athletic shoes are recommended, as Taquile is a 45-minute to 1-hour uphill hike.
  • Constant hydration:
Bring a reusable water bottle or buy one on the islands. Staying hydrated is key to avoiding altitude fatigue.
  • Cash (Peruvian soles):
There are no ATMs on the islands, nor are cards accepted.
  • Bring small change for:
    Totora reed rafting (optional).
Buying handicrafts or textiles in Taquile.
Tips for guides or local residents.
  • Light food:
Eat a light breakfast before the tour (bread, fruit, herbal teas). Avoid heavy or greasy meals to avoid discomfort during the trip.
  • Photography equipment:
Don’t forget your camera or cell phone with a charged battery and enough memory, as the views of the lake, the islands, and local traditions are unique.
If you prefer, bring a power bank to charge your devices.
  • Cultural Respect:
Ask locals for permission before taking photographs.
Appreciate their traditions and crafts, as they are an important source of income for local families.
  • Weather Conditions:
The weather in the highlands is unpredictable: it can be sunny in the morning and cool or windy in the afternoon. Be prepared for sudden temperature changes.
  • Physical Condition:
The tour is suitable for all ages, but the hike in Taquile can be challenging for people with reduced mobility. It is recommended to inform the guide about taking longer breaks.
